What We Do
Outdoor Hams pursues two goals in its commitment to helping young North Carolinians. First, beyond the mainstream communication technologies such as internet and cell phones, we provide practical technological experience to adolescents to better prepare them for participation in a global labor market which increasingly demands specialized and diverse technical skills. Second, we encourage adolescents to pursue active lifestyles, reducing the likelihood that the individuals will suffer the physical and psychological ailments symptomatic of obesity, poor nutrition, and lethargy during the critical growth and development stages of adolescence and beyond.
In furtherance of our goals, Outdoor Hams will organize an annual fundraiser, the first of which is the Outdoor Hams Transcontinental Bike Ride. Only Mark and Brian will participate in the ten-week bike ride. However, in subsequent fundraisers, we look forward to involving eager volunteers from all over the state.
The objectives of the fundraisers are to provide adolescents with hands-on experience with radio technology, a chance to be active in the outdoors, and also the opportunity to raise money for
As a fledgling non-profit organization occupying a narrow niche of the philanthropic spectrum, we have only begun to explore the possibilities for for blending amateur radio and outdoor activity in a way to improve the technological competency and general health and wellness of North Carolina's youth. We welcome and encourage all opinions, questions, and suggestions.
